An estimated 10 million people worldwide are living with Parkinson's disease, a disorder of the central nervous system that affects movement and often includes tremors, slow movement, stiffness and loss of balance.
While there is no cure, there are ways to treat symptoms, including music.
A recent viral video shows a 73-year-old Oklahoma man struggling to walk without his walker. But when music begins to play, he’s able to sing and even two-step with his nurse.
Mercy neurologist, Dr. Margo Butchee, explained the phenomenon in a recent interview with KWTV.
“The area of the brain that’s damaged in Parkinson’s disease helps to control movement and that area of the brain is kind of like an internal rhythm pacemaker,” said Dr. Butchee.
